If you're totally new to the language that you wish to learn. Then first of all,
you should learn the vocabulary. You can do this using the "show words list" for the
different categories. Once you feel that you know the vocabulary by heart, go start
practicing by solving the crosswords.
Please notice that if you are serious about learning the new language, you would probably need
to study it in some kind of a program. That is, you could attend a course, or simply use a text book.
The crosswords in this site would supplement such a learning program, as they provide an excellent
tool to learn the vocabulary.
There are two methods to select which word to translate. First, by choosing a word from the "across"
or the "down" lists. The corresponding word in the crossword would be highlighted in yellow.
The second method, is to choose a specific letter in the crossword. This can be done using the mouse,
or by navigating the crosswords using the arrow keys.
Once you have selected a word to translate (using one the two methods described above),
you can simply start filing the letters using the keyboard. The text would be added from
left to right, or top to bottom. Notice the letters are always added to the word
highlighted in yellow. To erase a letter, use the backspace key.
There are two differences between the two difficulty levels. In the "Simple" level, hints are
given for the current selected word, whereas in the "Advanced" mode, the hint is for the current
letter. The second difference is that in the "Simple" mode, wrong letters are marked immediately.
In the "Advanced" mode, you must use the "Check!" button to check for wrong letters, and to find out
if the crossword is completed correctly.

Then, it is strongly recommended that you practice the vocabulary from both "English to French", and
"French to English". In fact, translating from French to English would probably be the easier option.
Once you master translating from French, you should practice the other way around.
